I love monogram artwork, and I love vintage spools. So it was inevitable that I make a monogram art piece out of these colorful wooden spools. But it keeps getting better: by using magnets, I’m able to change the monogram whenever I want, in case I change my name to Puff Johnny or something like that.

Start with a piece of galvanized sheet metal. I got mine in the roofing aisle at Home Depot. It comes in a 8″ x 12″ size, so I just trimmed it to 8″ x 10″ to fit an 8×10 frame.

Glue some decorative paper on one side of the sheet metal. I used scrapbook paper from Michael’s, and I adhered it with Super 77 spray adhesive.

Place the metal in a picture frame with the decorative side facing out. I bought my frame from Michael’s. It came with a piece of glass, which I removed, since I didn’t want that.

Using a hot glue gun, glue a magnet on one of the ends of each spool. I bought heavy duty 1/2″ diameter neodymium magnets from Amazon. I love these magnets.

Now, just place the spools on the framed sheet metal, magnet side down. You can make monograms, numbers, simple doodles, whatever!
